The Cancer Committee selected breast cancer as the primary cancer screening for 2017. Breast cancer remains in the top three cancers in Kentucky. Currently, mammograms are the best tool to screen for breast cancer, often finding early stages of cancer before it has spread. Early detection leads to a better chance of a cure, therefore decreasing the mortality rate.
The Medical Center at Bowling Green held a mammogram screening event, “Mamm’s Day Out,” targeting women who were within the appropriate mammogram screening guidelines, but who had never had a mammogram; or who had a mammogram in the past, but did not return for another screening in the recommended amount of time. Financial assistance was provided for women who were uninsured or under-insured. Sixteen women were reached through this screening.
